At least two species of Hymenoptera (includes bees and wasps) have been observed entering their excavated nest holes in this tree stump. A pile of sawdust at its base indicates the dry woody material that has been removed to make suitable chambers for egg laying. The speed with which the insects were seen to enter their burrows made it impossible to determine whether they were solitary bees or solitary wasps, let alone which species they were. There was certainly no time to take a photograph. However, given enough observation time, it might be possible to make some tentative identification!
