A Syrphus hoverfly on one of the flowers in the park today. There is a suggestion of hairy eyes which would make this Syrphus torvus.

Well, that brings our total species identified to 22. I have updated our Hoverfly page to reflect this.

How many hoverflies are recorded in the BRERC book Introduction to Hoverflies of the Bristol Region?

Wow, Des. Wouldn't want to argue on this! And I should have guessed you wouldn't go for even a tentative ID without getting a second expert opinion. All I can say in my defence is that I have zoomed in but really can't see any sign of hairs on the eyes, though there are what look like pollen grains on (the fly's) right eye. But maybe they are adhering there having been trapped on the hairs! Anyway, I'll concede you and Roger have better vision than me and it therefore could be S. torvus.

Simon - if you zoom in there are what appear to be hairs on the lower left of the nearest eye which I drew to the attention of Roger Morris. He said it's a possibility they are hairs and this might therefore be S. torvus. I told Roger I'm happy for him to record it as Syrphus sp. on the Hoverfly Recording Scheme. I'm certainly not making any extravagant claims about its ID!

I think the hairs you can see are on the occiput behind the eyes. The hairs on the eyes of the male S. torvus are extremely small and just wouldn't be visible in this photo, even if they were present.

Hairy eyed - I thought they were its eye-lashes.
