This is the new play area in Canford Park, taken just before the work was completed. Do you think we should have something like this in our park? Comments please.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for taking time to post the message. As you can see from the other posts you are not alone.

As I understand it, the plans have been 'sent back to the drawing board'. However, the funding for the Play Area Improvements comes with some prescritions, and I believe 'natural materials like sand and wood' is one of them.

Anna King is our Play Area representative, I will alert her to your post - if you want to be more involved you could join the Play Area Group. Or you might like to attend our next committee meeting which are always open to eveyone who wants to attend. The meeting will appear shortly on the Events section of the website. Previous minutes can be found in the Forum Section.

Hello; I just joined the friends of St Andrews Park group and I also don't think sand is a good idea for the same reasons that have already been mentioned. My kids are now mid & late teens and use the park in a different way & only on the odd occasion - but if my kids were young and I was using the play area I would share the concerns about animal waste and glass. I also think that the novelty of sand would wear off pretty quick for them too if my memory serves me right when they were (and I was) young!.

To have such a monstrosity in our Park would seem to be very much out of place.....Doug

By all means add equipment like this to the existing equipment, but don't take away what is there already! I also think the sand is likely to be more trouble than other soft impact fill materials. Don't think the logs are likely to inspire much creative play if that is what they are meant for.

call me a kill joy, but sand will hide broken glass and animal waste.
i support keeping what we have and adding additional equipment and not throwing out what already is well used. if we then discover that everyone stops using the old equipment then get rid of it!

I agree with Sarah.....there is nothing wrong with the existing play items in the Park & they should be added to

NOT replaced!!......Doug Reid

Can't help feel that starting with a few more ever popular swings would be most useful. I find that the novelty of sand wears off after about 10 mins with my three - especially when they eat it.

Hello Playground Users
I understood from the discussion meeting in Feb, that new equipment was to be provided with the extra money which would be suitable for 8-13 year olds.Nothing was said about removing existing equipment- which though not fantastic, is well used by the younger children. Also leaving the bottom wooden structures without improving the poor drainage seems ridiculous.
£50,000 will not go far at all if it is to provide play for ALL ages from toddlers to teenagers.
no wonder they are proposing a bit of sand and a few old logs!
more information please. Sarah McMurchie

Hi,

It is great that Bristol Parks is willing to upgrade our play area in the Park, and equipment looks good. But white sand and bark? Even in this picture, taken before the work was completed the sand is already spilling onto the tarmac path. Who will inspect the sand each day to make sure no glass has become embedded?
