Good news.  But it would be good to get some feedback from the Council as to the comments of the judges. Did they have any criticisms to make, suggestions for improvements? Last year the judges felt…Continue

A Syrphus hoverfly on one of the flowers in the park today. There is a suggestion of hairy eyes which would make this Syrphus torvus.

"Wow, Des. Wouldn't want to argue on this! And I should have guessed you wouldn't go for even a tentative ID without getting a second expert opinion. All I can say in my defence is that I have zoomed in but really can't see any sign of…"

"Des, I think the hairs you can see are on the occiput behind the eyes. The hairs on the eyes of the male S. torvus are extremely small and just wouldn't be visible in this photo, even if they were present."

"Hi Jane, I have just seen the date of the next FoSAP meeting. I'm afraid I won't be in Bristol then! So hope you may be able to attend and raise the hedgehog issue. If not, it will have to be deferred to a later meeting. Sorry I…"

Toad tadpoles still at an early stage of metamorphosis, October 5th '16.

For some unknown reason, many of the toad tadpoles in the pond are retarded in their development this year and are not going to change into toadlets and emerge onto land. They will be able to survive the winter by hibernating in the pond and then…

"Hi Jane, For what it is worth, here (below) is the reply from The Mammal Society, which is I suppose, just based on common sense and what you suggested in the first place! Whether the Council in its present financial situation will be willing to…"

"Hi Jane, Good to know there are still hedgehogs in and around the park, but what a shame one has died in this way. I think some kind of ramp might help, but maybe only if there was at least one provided on each side of the pool. But it sounds like…"

"What a striking colour. These plants were part of the planting of the original pond many years ago; when the pond was renovated many of the plants, including these, were replanted."

"We have this query from a regular park user: some of the green fencing around the annual flower meadows has been removed, but some remains. Is that because someone has helped themselves to it, or is it part of a plan? Is the plan to remove it all at…"

Three 'green' talks at the Bishopston Society AGM on Sept 29th 2014 may be of interest

Posted on October 1, 2014 at 11:24 1 Comment

All three talks were about local volunteers taking on neighbourhood initiatives to develop green areas for the benefit and use of the  community. A summary of these very interesting talks can be seen here:

Hi Simon, The only change implemented by me was adding the FoSAP image to the home page. I have not made any changes although the service provider 'ning' might well have done. If you have any worked examples then give me a shout and I will try and contact ning for help.

Thanks
