Lichens in the Park

Welcome to the Lichen Blog.

The lichens in the park are doing well on trees trunks, branches, fences and even on the concrete and some of the paths.  Lichens often favour just one or two of these habitats.

The high winds (Nov 2010 and…

Bird walk 20 May 12

This was one of our quieter walks with very little birdsong heard considering the time of year. We did see some interesting interaction between Mistle Thrush and Blackbird and evidence of nesting Magpies. As always, it was a great chance to meet up and have a natter discuss issues affecting the park.

The full list:

Blue Tit - seen and heard in ones and twos

Great Tit - 1 or 2 singing…

Bird Walk 15 Apr 12

The cool weather seemed to suppress birdsong today and our feathered friends were rather elusive, most being heard rather than seen. The list in full:

Chaffinch 2 or 3 singing

Greenfinch 1 or 2 flying over

Goldfinch a few singing

Great Tit  several

Blue Tit lots heard and seen including courtship display

Coal Tit a pair spotted by Simon showed…

Bird walk 18 March

Most of the usual suspects appeared this morning - I'm talking about the birds, not the birdwatchers - and the weather stayed fine. The list in full:

Blackbird - several seen, including rival males squabbling

Mistle Thrush - 2 or 3 seen

Blue Tit - several birds

Great Tit - a few

Long-tailed Tit - sightings included one apparently collecting nesting…

Park Toilets closed for investigations

Information about the park toilets from Miles Harris, who is the Bristol City Council officer responsible for parks maintenance in our area.

Bird walk 19th February

It was a cold winter's morning, but there was a pre-echo of spring in the air. Some birds were busy building nests while others 'tuned up' ready for the song-filled months ahead. The following birds were seen and/or heard:

Long-tailed Tit - a couple seen near the toilets (a couple of birds that is).

Magpie - several birds around including at least one carrying nesting material.

Carrion Crow - 4 or…

Bird Walk 15 January 12

A beautiful sunny morning brought out the birds and the watchers and we were treated to a taste of winter and the promise of spring. The full list is as follows:

Fieldfare - first spotted by Simon as it fed on the ground. Unusual to see one 'on the deck' in the park.

Redwing - 2 or 3 birds and one showing particularly well.

Blackcap - at least 1 over-wintering bird. A brief burst of almost full-blown song was unusual so…

Bird walk 20 Nov

It was a quiet start to our monthly stroll round the park this morning and I did wonder if we'd see anything at all. However, we were later rewarded with superb views of sizeable Starling and finch flocks making it a spectacular end to this year's bird walks. The full list is as follows:

Starling - a notable and noisy influx of these birds, many no doubt arrivals from the continent.

Greenfinch - a good showing of 10+…
