Bird Walk 18 April

The list of birds seen today doesn't look particularly impressive on paper but our feathered friends behaved particularly well, allowing close and prolonged views. A very good turn-out for the event, so thanks everyone who turned up.

Wren - sat on top of fences and bushes and feeding on the grass. In short, flaunting themselves.…

Birds of St Andrews Park - the story so far....

Over the last couple of years I and many others have been noting the birds in St Andrews Park and I've finally got round to doing a spreadsheet as attached. Of course, there will be frequent additions to the list and changes in status of various species, so the list is by no means set in stone. Meanwhile, please feel free to report any sightings either to me privately, or via the website.…

Traffic noise pollution

Bristol City Council have launched an interactive map where people can add their favourite quiet place. This could be a park, woodland, cemetery or other open space. The noise consultation will feed into the noise action plan for the city and help us in developing a noise strategy for Bristol.

"Environmental" or "ambient" noise is unwanted or harmful outdoor sound created by human activities, including road, rail, aircraft and industrial… Continue

January Bird Walk Cancelled Shock

In view of the latest weather forecast I have cancelled January's bird walk because of the possibility of marauding polar bears adding to health and safety concerns.

The bird walks will resume in February when I'm sure we'll all be basking in above-average temperatures. See you then!

Cycling City

As part of the

Cycling City and Connect2 Projects, Bristol City Council in partnership with North Somerset Council are proposing to build a new shared pedestrian and cycle path connecting

Clanage Road to Ashton Road. The path would avoid the busy A370 Brunel Way. The proposed path across the bottom of the estate grounds affords spectacular views of the Grade I Listed Mansion House and the Grade II* Listed Landscape. The proposed path would leave Ashton Road at the car… Continue

I wonder if anyone can help. I want to get in touch with the people who run the cafe in St Andrew's Park (for nice reasons - I'm after some advice) and they've disappeared for the winter. Can anyone help me do this? I can't find a seperate website or anything.
Many thanks,

It was a lovely sunny morning following yesterday's stormy conditions and it was good to welcome some new people. Highlights included a vocal but elusive Goldcrest, a confiding Jay and some winter thrushes flying over the park. Birds seen or heard today are as follows:

Blackbird 3 or 4

Chaffinch small groups of mainly female birds, mostly around the park-keeper's compound

Greenfinch 3 Flew around near the main Effingham Road entrance at the start of the… Continue

Bird Walk 18th October

Another successful bird walk on a dry autumn morning - it was good to see some new faces among the party as well. After a quiet start with just a few singing Robins to entertain us, things improved at the pond where a Grey Wagtail did a flypast. Later, a party of Mistle Thrushes feeding in adjacent gardens and flying to and from the park gave excellent views.

Full list of birds seen and heard as follows:

Mistle Thrush (up to 4) These may have been locally bred birds… Continue

Montpelier Poplars Under Threat Again

Colston's Girls' School is the subject of a planning application submitted in May 2009. Supplementary documents have been posted in September which include felling the remaining black poplars, the very same trees which were saved by protesters in 1989. They omitted to mention this tree felling in their original exhibition leaflet too.

The application also includes… Continue
