Bird walk 20 April

Well, with overcast skies and a chilly easterly it felt more like November than April but the birds obviously knew it was spring as we saw some signs of nesting. The list is as follows:

Mistle Thrush - 1 singing and another seen carrying food so there must be a nest nearby. We didn't find it but it'll be worth keeping an eye on.

Blackbird - several birds seen

Robin - 1 or 2 seen and…

Will we lose our loos?

Local activist Stella Perrett has submitted a question to Bristol City Council following plans to close 22 public loos as part of its austerity programme. She has asked for clarity on the likely impact on the loos in the park.I will let you know the reply as soon as received.

It is important that the recently refurbished toilets stay open, especially in view of the number of people who use the park in the summer.

Watch this space!

Bird walk 17 November

Another very quiet bird walk this morning. Perhaps the mild weather means that many birds are not using the park's food resources. There was also lots of leaves still on the trees which made spotting birds more difficult. The full list is as follows:

Blackbird - 3 or 4 seen

Carrion Crow - a few

Robin - 1 or 2 seen and heard

Goldfinch - just 1 or 2 birds noted

Chaffinch -…

Bird walk 20 October

Well once again the birds were playing hard to get this morning. There seemed very little activity during our walk and of course the foliage made spotting any birds rather difficult. The full list is as follows:

Jay - up to 3 seen

Great Tit - a few calling and 1 or 2 seen briefly

Carrion Crow - several…

Bird walk 21 April

Well as Simon said earlier, we were able to see a Mistle Thrush nest with young - a definite highlight of this morning's walk. The full list:

Blackbird - several birds

Robin - 1 or 2

Wren - at least 2 birds, 1 showing well near the bowling…

Bird walk 21 Oct 12

At times it was very quiet this morning with seemingly little bird activity but we reached a respectable total in the end, helped by a fly-over Redpoll, a small finch with a distinctive buzzing call. The list in full:

Bird walk 16 Sep 12

As expected, there were not too many birds on view this morning due to the dense foliage on the trees but we managed to make the most of a small total. Full list as follows:

Bird walk 20 May 12

This was one of our quieter walks with very little birdsong heard considering the time of year. We did see some interesting interaction between Mistle Thrush and Blackbird and evidence of nesting Magpies. As always, it was a great chance to meet up and have a natter discuss issues affecting the park.

The full list:

Blue Tit - seen and heard in ones and twos

Great Tit - 1 or 2 singing…

Goldfinch a few singing

Great Tit  several

Blue Tit lots heard and seen including courtship display

Bird walk 19th February

It was a cold winter's morning, but there was a pre-echo of spring in the air. Some birds were busy building nests while others 'tuned up' ready for the song-filled months ahead. The following birds were seen and/or heard:

Long-tailed Tit - a couple seen near the toilets (a couple of birds that is).

Magpie - several birds around including at least one carrying nesting material.

Carrion Crow - 4 or…
