The lichens in the park are doing well on trees trunks, branches, fences and even on the concrete and some of the paths. Lichens often favour just one or two of these habitats.
The high winds (Nov 2010 and…

Thanks for the welcome Jo. The park really is a God send.
Hi Jo,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your response to my email. I'd be happy to volunteer for whatever work in the park. I have a pair of waders and very used to being in water, so can help with reducing the vegetation in the pond. I'd also like to contribute to any FOSAP fund to replace the fallen trees, especially the flowering cherries. I had a to add that I work from home some of the times and out of London at others, so not always available.
Hi Jo.
Ning introduced a problem when they upgraded their software. It has now been fixed.
Thanks

Hi Jo
I don't think I can make the meeting unfortunately but I am most concerned about the large amount of lovely mature trees in the park that have been removed over the last few years! I've seen them go one by one - probably 10 or more have been removed and not replaced in the last few years.
Who decides which trees to cut down I wonder and can we have any say in it?
Some of them have had very small areas of disease and would probably thrive for years despite modern health and safety rules.

I'm not an actual member of the WIldlife Group but I have started going on the Bird walks, and really enjoyed the one last Sunday. Des who runs them is a work colleague of mine.
I have taken the liberty of recommending to some universities doing Climate Change Studies that they look at the archived data that you have all put up on this website over the years, of flora and fauna in the park. From the bird walks and your other wildlife walks. Especially regarding what species are seen at different times of year, how plants are reacting to the wierd weather etc.
I have had this positive reply from Oxford Univerisitys Post Graduate course co-ordinator.
I hope there is no one on the site who is so anti-climate change that they object to me drawing these universities attention to your website, after all it is in the public domain. and your data could be of real help to climate change students.

Dear Stella and the Friends of St Andrew’s Park,
Many thanks indeed for thinking to offer such information to us. I will circulate your note to the department so that any interested groups can respond.
Thank you again,

That's really interesting, Jo, to see the difference that drying out makes to the lichens. It can't make identification any easier.
Warmest regards,
Ches
I'm working with Margaret Dunning and Ruth Essex in Bristol City Council's Arts, Festivals & Events Team on an installation by Bristol Artist Luke Jerram called Play Me, I'm Yours. The plan is to put 16 upright pianos in public outdoor spaces across the city for three weeks in September for people to play as part of the Colston Hall Opening celebrations. The idea is that the public can play the pianos and that gigs, concerts and performances will also be encouraged.
We are looking at a number of locations across the city, with some in the city centre and others out in the neighbourhoods. One of the key locations I have been asked to look into is St Andrews Park. I've checked the existing Premises License for the square and there is one in place that would cover this installation allowing us to have the piano operable from 8am to 11pm, Monday to Sunday for the three week period from Friday 4 September through until Monday 28 September 2009.
I would like to be able to meet up with someone from FOSAP to discuss possible location for the piano. We also need some help with unlocking the piano in the morning and locking it up at night so that it can't be played outside the entertainment licence hours and wonder if FOSAP might be able to help out?
Many thanks for your help with this matter.

Brick as it should reflect the houses that surround the Park but in essence it is probably a good idea but where will it stand wirh ELF & Safety?? We are so obsessed with that here but in Australia they would obviously take a far more pragmatic approach to a few burns Doug Reid k
